Why You Should See an Astrologer
If you read my post on 37 things to do when you turn 37, you know that number 19 on the list is see a psychic, astrologer or medium. I recommend doing this because, first off, it’s a lot of fun and second you will learn a thing or two about yourself from the experience.
I know I did.
At the beginning of 2017, I met with an astrologer. I’m not a religious or spiritual person by nature and this meeting was very much outside my comfort zone. This encounter came at a time when I was feeling particularly lost. The 2016 election was soul-crushing and I was grappling with some very tough truths.
- I’d been living in a bubble.
- I knew racism was always part of the equation, but now someone had run, and won, on a platform of nationalism.
- The women’s movement had been dealt a huge blow.
- How the fuck was I supposed to raise children in this new era?
- My professional life seemed so insignificant compared to everything else happening in the world.
- Could I still be a leader when I felt so hopeless?
I was stumbling around numb and I needed to wake up.
I took a trip to Tucson. Traveling is always good for getting some perspective. I find when I return from a trip or vacation, I usually have a fresh outlook and can better approach my life. Giving yourself space to reflect and be inspired by new surroundings is helpful. It’s also good to take breaks and relax every once in awhile. You’ll come back energized. On this trip, I had the opportunity to see an astrologer.
So there I was in the Arizona desert sitting across from a complete stranger who was going to read my chart and give me insights into my life. I had very low expectations going in. I thought perhaps it would be good for a laugh. I could say I tried it.
What happened next was so unexpected. It set me back on course.
Written in the Stars
Astrology is the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world.
Before the meeting, I was asked to provide my birthday, time of birth and exact location where I was born. When I got to my appointment she had charted everything out for me and began to explain how the chart worked.
There is the Midheaven, which is representative of what is going on over your head when you are born and it represents your highest goals and aims in life. The chart is divided into 12 sections, called houses, which represent the different areas of your life. Each house is represented by a zodiac. The planets move around the houses and talk to each other, thus affecting your life in positive and negative ways.
I’ll back up here for just a moment to explain that heading into this trip I was heavily questioning whether I wanted to continue in my role at our business. For those who don’t know, my husband and I own and run a company together. Now looking back, the election had a lot to do with this. However, over the course of my professional life, every few years I will begin feeling very restless about my purpose. I have so many interests, skills and experiences I want to explore I sometimes feel like I may be doing the wrong type of work, or my efforts would be better spent somewhere else.
I was smack dab in the middle of one of these professional identity crises walking into the astrology reading.
The very first thing this woman tells me is my chart has “a sun square to Neptune” and the particular angle of this can cause confusion about what I want to do for a living and/or my goals in life. Because of this aspect of my chart, throughout my whole life, I will always be questioning my purpose, occupation and professional choices.
This was an ah-ha moment.
For the last three months, I had been openly communicating to Aaron about my uncertainty with my professional life. We were having very serious talks about me stepping back from our business to pursue something else. The trouble was, I didn’t know what that “something else” really was.
Several years earlier I had the same feeling. It was when we had just gotten married and I was working at a big PR agency and had stopped finding the work and lifestyle fulfilling. I wanted to explore new things. Aaron was supportive then. It just so happened that my next career move was us starting a business together.
The astrologer’s revelation that this is part of my cosmic makeup was completely eye-opening to me. For so long I thought I was crazy not to be satisfied with my successful career, but really it meant I’m someone who is always going to strive for more and never settle.
The astrologer told me lots of other things about myself. Some surface level and some very deep. Things she couldn’t have possibly known about me.
She recorded the session, and I’m so glad she did because every so often I listen to it again. Especially when I’m feeling particularly challenged, or having doubts about my purpose or career path. It’s a reminder that it’s part of my personality and if I work through it, I’ll come through on the other side with the right answer.
I returned home from the trip with some clarity, which inspired me to get back on track after the election of 2016. I decided to remain in my role at the company. During the session, she reminded me that throughout the year I’ll still be questioning things, but it will all work out. That was back in February 2017 and it truly has.
Being Open to Receiving What the Universe Gives You
This experience led me to start following my horoscope more closely. I recently discovered the Astro Twins and their website and app, Astrostyle. I check my horoscope on this site every day. Sometimes the horoscope is so spot on with what’s happening in my life. Other times the horoscope suggests that it would be a good time to do something, so I follow the advice.
For example, I had been working on setting up this blog for months, but I wasn’t sure the right time to announce it and make it public. My horoscope said August 15, 2017, would be a good day for me to go viral. On that day, I put the link up on my Facebook page and it took off from there.
Again, I’ll stress I’m not some crazy spiritual person, but I do think there is something about the universe giving you what you need when you need it.
Recently, I learned about a book called E-Squared: Nine Do-It-Yourself Energy Experiments That Prove Your Thoughts Create Your Reality. E-Squared is a manual with simple experiments to prove that there is a good force in the universe. The book has nine 48-hour experiments for you to conduct to prove it. I’m diving into this book and giving it a try.
So, let’s all start receiving what the universe gives us! I’d love to hear how the universe is speaking to you. Let me know in the comments below.
